What is Belaying and do I need to take the Belay Class?

Belaying, in a traditional climbing context, is a rope management technique that allows a climber to ascend and descend or be lowered from a wall while being secured to an anchor or anchors with the assistance of a belayer. The Belay Class teaches basic belay techniques and how to minimize risk while belaying. If you have never belayed before there is a one time charge of $12.50 to take this class and it normally takes about 45 minutes. Once you pass the class you are able to belay for the remainder of the day at On The Rocks.  On your next visit you will need to take a quick belay test to ensure that you are able to demonstrate competence in belaying.  Once you pass this test, you are free to belay for all your future visits. If you are an experienced belayer, you do not need to take the class but you must be able to pass an examination before you can be certified to belay.
